@CanesTrack Hosting Hurricane Alumni Invitational
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field team will honor 15 seniors and welcome back Canes stars of the past at the 2017 Hurricane Alumni Invitational.
The annual Hurricane Alumni Invitational is the last of three home meets for the Miami track and field team in 2017 and it will feature a talented field of teams in action. In addition to the host Hurricanes, fellow ACC schools Pitt and Syracuse, as well as UConn, Buffalo, Northeastern, Quinnipiac, FIU, FAU, FGCU, Nova Southeastern, Lynn and Florida Memorial will be competing at Cobb Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
Friday’s action begins at 10 a.m., with the men’s decathlon 100m, while the women’s heptathlon is set to begin at 11 a.m., with the 100m hurdles. In addition to the multi-events, the men’s and women’s javelin, men’s and women’s hammer throw and men’s and women’s high jump are all scheduled for Friday afternoon.
Saturday will feature an action-packed schedule, beginning with the decathlon at 9 a.m., and the heptathlon at 9:30 a.m. Running events are set to begin with the women’s 4x100m relay at 2 p.m., while the field events open at 3 p.m., with the women’s discus, men’s shot put and men’s and women’s long jump. The senior ceremony is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
NCAA champion Shakima Wimbley, All-Americans Ebony Morrison and Aiyanna Stiverne and ACC medalist Carlos Mangum highlight a stellar 2017 senior class that include four men and 11 women.
Wimbley has cemented herself as one of the greatest sprinters in ACC and Hurricanes history, winning an NCAA indoor 400m championship, earning 16 ACC individual titles and 11 All-America honors as a Hurricane.
Morrison’s Miami career has been brief, after joining the Canes following two years at Auburn, but the hurdler has made a huge impact. The 2017 ACC 60m hurdles champion also represented Miami at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships in both the 100m hurdles and the 4x100m relay.
Like Morrison, Stiverne joined the Canes prior to her junior season and made a major impact at Miami. The sprinter was on Miami’s all-america 4x400m relay in 2016 and was a key component on Miami’s back-to-back ACC indoor championship teams.
Distance runner Gabrielle Hesslau is another Cane who has carved her name in the record books at Miami. The senior was the Hurricanes’ top cross country runner over her final three years and has set four school records on the track.
Other women’s seniors include thrower Karyna Armstrong, distance runners Megan Brown and Samantha Chenkin, pole vaulters Amanda and Emily Gale, and sprinters Meridith Louisville and Anthonia Moore.
Mangum has been a steady contributor for Miami’s men, setting school records in both the weight throw and hammer throw. One of the top throwers in program history, Mangum was a 2016 second team indoor All-American in the weight throw and has won two ACC silver medals in the event. He also has scored for the Canes in the hammer throw at the ACC outdoor championships in each of the previous three years and represented Miami at the NCAA East Preliminary.
Miami will also honor senior thrower Daniel Polinski and senior distance runners Nick Kaleel and Jonathan Keller for their contributions to the program.
In addition to the current Hurricanes in action at this weekend’s meet, Olympian Alysha Newman, former All-Americans Devon Hill and Kelsey Balkwill and former Miami standout Jennifer Estime are among the alumni Canes scheduled to compete at Cobb Stadium.
Following this weekend’s action, the Canes will travel to Waco, Texas, to compete at the Michael Johnson Invitational. To view the complete Miami track and field schedule for the 2017 season, click here.
