@CanesTrack Hosting Hurricane Collegiate Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field team will be back on its home track this weekend at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational.

The Hurricanes will welcome a talented field of teams to Cobb Stadium for the second of three home meets this outdoor season. In addition to the hometown Canes, the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational will feature student-athletes from Florida, Kansas State, Clemson, Virginia, Harvard, UConn, FIU, FAU, USF, Southeastern Louisiana and Bethune-Cookman.

Saturday’s competition begins at 10 a.m., with the men’s and women’s javelin and men’s and women’s hammer throw. Running events begin at 1 p.m., with the women’s 4x100m relay and the day will conclude with the men’s 4x400m relay at 5:15 p.m.

Miami will have several talented student-athletes in action on the opening weekend of the outdoor season, including nine Hurricanes who competed at the NCAA East Preliminary or NCAA Outdoor championships a year ago.

The Hurricane women feature several student-athletes that rank among the best in the ACC in their respective events this season. Erin Ford and Anna Runia are fifth and sixth, respectively in the 200m, while Anthonia Moore (7th) and Meridith Louisville (8th) are top 10 in the 400m. Anne Den Otter is fifth in the women’s 1500m, while Gabrielle Hesslau leads the ACC in the women’s 5000m.

In the field events, Erika Voyzey is the ACC leader in the women’s high jump, while Kyra Maryland and Celine Thompson are tied for fourth in the same event. Emily Gale is fifth in the pole vault, while Amy Taintor is the ACC and NCAA leader in the long jump. Stefani Kerrison (3rd) and Darlene Charles (4th) join Taintor in the top five of the women’s long jump among ACC women. Sherry Lubin is currently fourth in the women’s shot put, while Zakiya Rashid is fourth in the women’s discus and seventh in the women’s hammer. Karyna Armstrong is fifth in the conference in the women’s hammer.

On the men’s side, Breon Mullings is currently fifth in the 400m, while Sean Grossman is third in the 5000m. Jonathan Keller (7th), Sean Hagert (8th) and Michael Miano (9th) give the Canes four men in the top 10 in the ACC in the 5000m. Tristan Schultheis is tied for fifth in the men’s high jump, while Daniel Polinski is third in the shot put and sixth in the discus. Carlos Mangum ranks second in the hammer throw and Andreas Christodoulou is third in the javelin.

Four hours of Saturday’s action will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra, beginning at 1 p.m., with AJ Ricketts and Joe Zagacki on the call.

Following this weekend’s action, the Canes will travel to Gainesville, Fla., to compete at Florida Relays from March 29 – April 1. To view the complete Miami track and field schedule for the 2017 season, click here.
