Layland Named Honorable Mention All-American
INDIANAPOLIS – Three members of the University of Miami swim & dive program wrapped up their trip to the 2017 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium Saturday.
Junior Wally Layland, who qualified for the 3-meter event at NCAAs during Zone B regional competition in Auburn, Ala., earlier in March, picked up the season All-America Honorable Mention recognition of her career Friday night.
Layland finished in 16th during Friday’s morning preliminary round for the final qualifying spot in the “B” final of the 3-meter.
She finished in fourth with a score of 313.50 in her night’s final round. It was another successful season for the Orlando native, who finished 11th at last year’s NCAA Championships in the 3-meter event in Atlanta.
Sophomore Marcela Maric and Layland both competed in the 1-meter diving event earlier in the week. Maric, making her first trip to the NCAA Championships, finished 24th with a score of 259.15. Layland finished preliminaries in 33rd with a score of 253.10.
Senior Angela Algee, making her second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships, qualified in three swimming events: the 100 yard butterfly, 200 butterfly and 50 freestyle.
Algee built momentum throughout the course of the week, posting a time of 23.16 in the 50 free and then touching the wall in the 100 fly in a time of 53.10.
She moved up 12 spots in the 200 fly with a time of 1:58.90 on the final day of action to cap a dominant four-year career at Miami.
Two Hurricanes will be returning to Indianapolis for the NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships from March 22-25. Junior Briadam Herrera (1-meter, 3-meter) and redshirt freshman David Dinsmore (platform) will represent the University of Miami next week at the IU Natatorium.
