@CanesTrack Opening Outdoor Season at Home
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field team will open its 2017 outdoor season at the Hurricane Invitational this weekend.
Miami will be on its home track at Cobb Stadium in three of the first four weeks of the outdoor season, beginning with the Hurricane Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Canes will also host the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational on March 25 and the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 7-8.
Competition begins at 2 p.m., Friday with the men’s and women’s hammer throw and will also feature the men’s and women’s pole vault and men’s and women’s 5000m run. Saturday is set to be action packed, with the men’s and women’s javelin kicking off the day at 10 a.m. Running events begin at 1 p.m., with the women’s 4x100m relay and the day will conclude with the men’s 4x400m relay at 4:50 p.m.
The Hurricane Invitational will feature several talented teams, including the host Hurricanes. Boston University, South Carolina, LIU Brooklyn, George Mason, FIU, FAU and FGCU are among the 14 schools scheduled to compete this weekend at the University of Miami.
Miami will have several talented student-athletes in action on the opening weekend of the outdoor season, including nine Hurricanes who competed at the NCAA East Preliminary or NCAA Outdoor championships a year ago.
The Hurricane women will be led by seven women that have competed on the biggest collegiate stages. Seniors Aiyanna Stiverne and Ebony Morrison are two to watch this weekend, teaming up on the 4x100m relay. Stiverne will be one of seven Hurricanes in the women’s 200m, joined by 2016 NCAA qualifiers Carolyn Brown, Erin Ford and Anna Runia.
In the field events, Miami will look for big performances from Stefani Kerrison in the long jump, Erika Voyzey in the high jump and Sherry Lubin, Zakiya Rashid and Karyna Armstrong in the throws. Junior Amy Taintor is also looking to start the outdoor season strong, competing in the high jump and long jump.
On the men’s side, senior Carlos Mangum and junior Henri Delauze lead the way. Mangum is an outstanding hammer thrower who competed at the NCAA East Preliminary a year ago, while Delauze will open his 2017 season on the 4x400m relay after a strong indoor season.
Miami looks to sprinters McKinly Brown and Breon Mullings and distance runner Sean Grossman, in addition to the 4x400m relay, to shine on the track. The Hurricanes also hope to see strong showings from Tristan Schultheis in the high jump, Andreas Christodoulou in the pole vault and javelin and Daniel Polinski in the shot put and discus.
Three hours of Saturday’s action will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra, beginning at 1 p.m., with AJ Ricketts and Juan Arango on the call.
Following this weekend’s action, the Canes are back in action at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational on March 25. To view the complete Miami Track and Field schedule for the 2017 season, click here.
