Reigning ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week Shakima Wimbley leads the Hurricanes women into Kentucky after an impressive showing a week ago at the Virginia Tech Invitational. The senior sprinter won the women’s 300m with a school record time of 36.72 seconds that is also the fastest in the country. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native was .05 seconds off the national collegiate record in the 300m. Her 36.72 time ranks ninth fastest among Americans and 24th fastest in the world all-time.
Other Canes to watch on the women’s side include sprinters Kristina Knott, Aiyanna Stiverne and Brittny Ellis, hurdlers Ebony Morrison and Stefani Kerrison, distance runners Gabrielle Hesslau and Anne Den Otter, jumpers Erika Voyzey and Darlene Charles, throwers Sherry Lubin, Zakiya Rashid and Karyna Armstrong and pentathletes Michelle Athlerley and Amy Taintor.
On the men’s side, the Canes will feature a blend of veterans and newcomers that will look to continue their success after a strong opening weekend at Virginia Tech. Senior thrower Carlos Mangum will look to build off last weekend’s victory in the men’s weight throw, while the Hurricanes will feature a bevy of gifted sprinters on the track.
Henri Delauze and Jaalen Jones are two juniors looking to lead Miami’s sprinters this weekend, while Myles Valentine, Brandon Taylor, Isaiah Taylor and McKinly Brown are a quartet of young burners who will continue to rise up the ranks.
Following this weekend’s trip to Kentucky, the Hurricanes will return home for a week of training before their first of two trips to Notre Dame during the 2017 indoor season. The Canes are back in action at the Meyo Invitational on Feb. 3-4, which will give them an opportunity to compete at the site of the 2017 ACC Indoor Championships, scheduled for Feb. 23-25.
