Shakima Wimbley Named ACC Performer of the Week
announced Tuesday by the conference office.
The senior sprinter won the women’s 300m at the Virginia Tech Invitational with a school record time of 36.72 seconds that is also the fastest in the country. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native was .05 seconds off the national collegiate record in the 300m. Her 36.72 time ranks ninth fastest among Americans and 24th fastest in the world all-time.
“This means a lot to me,” Wimbley said. “The ACC is a wonderful conference and to start off my season getting this recognition is always appreciated. It pushes me to continue being the best that I can.”
Wimbley is the first Hurricane to earn ACC Performer of the Week honors in 2017. The reigning ACC Women’s Indoor Track Most Outstanding Performer, Wimbley’s 400m time of 51.82 seconds ranked first among returning student-athletes, while her best 200m time of 23.08 seconds sat seventh on the list entering the 2017 indoor season.
“Shakima ran a very aggressive race,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “She ran it with confidence and composure and that will go a long way in setting her up to achieve her season goals.”
The Hurricanes will head to Kentucky to compete at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet this weekend. To view the complete Miami Track and Field schedule for the 2017 season, click here.
