No. 74 Canes Fall to No. 66 Duke

CORAL GABLES, FLA- The No. 74 University of Miami men’s tennis squad dropped its ACC match against No. 66 Duke, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

This is the first time this season the Hurricanes fell in back-to-back matches at home.

Miami played exceptionally well to start the match, walking away with the doubles point. At the No. 2 Nile Clark and Piotr Lomacki defeated Jason Lapidus and Daniel McCall 6-3 to give Miami the edge. It was Bernard Tefel and Max Andrews at the No. 2 who gave Miami the advantage, taking down Nicolas Alvarez and Vincent Lin 6-4.

Today’s match marked the first time in Hurricanes uniform that freshman Fermin Calvo saw action in doubles, partnering with Kevin Bondar. The two dropped their set against Ryan Dickerson and Josh Levine 4-6.

“We played very good doubles on all courts, and Bernard and Max were great at the net to clinch the doubles point for us.  We had chances to turn the match around but we lost a few deuce points in a row and couldn’t capitalize on the opportunities we had,” said head coach Mario Rincon

Nevertheless, the Canes headed into singles action leading the Blue Devils 1-0. Miami saw some success at singles but came up shy against Duke.

At the No. 2 Andrews escaped defeat, taking down Catalin Mateas 3-6, 6-7. At the No. 1 Piotr Lomacki was defeated first time since Jan. 30. Lomacki came up short against No. 20 Nicolas Alvarez 6-4. 6-4. For the first time at the No. 3 position, Calvo fell to Vincent Lin 6-4, 6-4.  TJ Pura 6-1, 6-0, defeated Clark at the No. 4. At the No. 5 spot Niclas Genovese fell to Ryan Dickerson 6-2, 6-0. In a close match up, Bondar came down to three sets but ultimately fell to Daniel McCall 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

Miami is now 6-6 overall and 1-1 in against ACC teams. The Canes look to regroup as they take on No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday, March 13 at 12 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
