CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team was victorious over Army West Point Monday morning, downing the Black Knights, 4-0. The scheduled double header between the two programs was cut short due to inclement weather conditions at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center Monday afternoon.

Monday’s win marks Miami’s fourth-straight victory on their home court. Their last win came against Troy University, a 4-3 victory Jan. 30.

“Today was a really great match for the guys, with a very competitive match to start out in doubles,” said assistant coach Mark Dickson. “In singles we had lost the first set on three courts, so we really needed the guys to bounce back and they did.”

Through the adversity, the Canes were able to perform well as a unit with what Dickson claimed was a complete day for everyone and a complete win for the whole team.

The day began with doubles action, where the Canes developed a consistent rhythm to grab the doubles point against the Black Knights.

At the No. 1 junior Jesse Flores and sophomore Christian Langmo put up a tough battle, taking the win against Grant Riechmann and Harrison McCormick, 6-4. Following Langmo and Flores, juniors Max Andrews and Bernard Tefel defeated Kyle Barnes and David Mitchell, 6-1, to give Miami the advantage entering singles play. Sophomore duo Piotr Lomacki and Nile Clark left their match unfinished against Michael Sienko and Michael Nguyen.

With the first point secured, the Canes began singles play with Andrews dominating throughout his two sets, taking down Harrison McCormick 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Fermin Calvo put up a tough performance against Michael Sienko, grabbing the 6-1, 6-1 win for the Canes. To clinch the match for Miami, No. 58 Lomacki defeated Grant Riechmann with a come-from-behind victory, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

After Lomacki’s win, Miami walked away with the victory against Army West Point, 4-0. At the No. 2 Langmo left his match unfinished 6-7, 5-2. At the No. 4 Flores and Barnes also left their match unfinished at 6-7, 6-3. At the No. 5 Niclas Genovese saw his first singles action in the spring season against Nguyen, leaving his match unfinished as well, 7-5, 4-6, 4-1.

The Canes now stand at 4-3 and will return to action on March 1, as they take on the Davidson Wildcats at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center at 2 p.m.
