Day One at Bulldog Scramble

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team opened up play this weekend at the Bulldog Scramble held at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The Hurricanes began Friday morning with doubles play as Kevin Bondar and Nile Clark teamed up to defeat Georgia Tech’s Michael Kay and Phillip Gresk, 8-4.

Simultaneously Dane Dunlap and Christian Langmo battled Georgia Tech’s Carlos Benito and Chris Yun, falling 8-5. Junior Nicolas Genovese also took the court and teamed up with South Carolina’s Scotty Cameron. The duo came up short, 7-8(2), against Georgia’s Andy Martinez and Alex Phillips.

Immediately following doubles play, the five Hurricanes once again took the courts for the morning session of singles play. Clark earned his second victory of the day when he took down South Carolina’s Sam Swank, 6-3, 7-6(5).

Bondar went head-to-head with Cameron of South Carolina Friday morning, falling, 4-6, 5-7.

Georgia’s Jan Zielinski defeated Langmo, 6-3, 6-3, while Dunlap fell to Robert Loeb of Georgia, 4-6, 4-6.

Genovese closed out the morning session against Elijah Melendez of Georgia Tech losing in three sets. The Switzerland native earned a 6-4 victory in the opening set, before falling in the second set, 4-6. In the final set, Genovese and Melendez battled in a 16-point tiebreaker with Melendez coming out on top 7-6(7).

At 2:30 p.m., all five Canes returned to the courts for their final matches of the afternoon. Bondar earned his first singles victory of the weekend over Georgia’s Andy Martinez, 6-4, 7-5.

In a battle between two athletes ranked in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate preseason polls, No. 58 Dunlap battled No. 109 Emil Reinberg of Georgia. Reinberg earned the upper hand, 6-3, 7-5.

Clark dropped his first match of the weekend, 4-6, 5-7, to Georgia’s Samuel Dromsky while Dunlap lost, 2-6, 5-7, against Georgia Tech’s Andrew Li.

Genovese matched up against Princeton’s Payton Holden for his third match of the day. The junior dropped the match, 4-6, 2-6.

The format will be a round-robin tournament with a maximum of 32 singles players. Singles will be best two out of three sets, while doubles will be an eight-game pro-set with no-ad scoring. Doubles play will start each day at 10 a.m., while singles action gets underway on Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and immediately following doubles on Sunday.
