All-American Monday - Johan Donar

Johan Donar (1987-90)

Achieving a 1984 top-15 ranking in his home country of Sweden, Johan Donar would treat the Hurricane fans to four amazing years as he earned All-American status in each season. In his first year of competition, Donar won nine of 10 matches on his way to an overall record of 25-14 in singles competition. At the end of the season, Donar was the No. 14 nationally ranked player.

Donar followed his impressive freshman season with an equally impressive sophomore season. Playing entirely out of the No. 1 position for the Hurricanes, Donar won nine consecutive matches and 18 of his last 24 to compile an overall singles record of 25-10. Teaming with Ollie Jonsson, Donar compiled an overall doubles record of 13-9. Donar not only displayed success on the court but he displayed success off it as well. For his accomplishments in the class room, Donar earned Dean’s List recognition in the spring of 1988.

As a junior, Donar compiled a nine game win streak and won 15 of his last 19 on his way to an overall singles record of 27-14. In the 1989 NCAA tournament, Donar reached the quarterfinals. In doubles competition, Donar teamed with fellow All-American Conny Falk to form one of the nation’s best No. 1 singles combinations. Donar compiled an overall record of 18-5, while winning 14 of the first 15 matches. In the final national collegiate tennis rankings of the year, Donar was selected No. 9 in singles and selected No. 4 with partner Conny Falk.

Donar closed out his Hurricane career with his most impressive since he stepped foot on the Coral Gables campus. Winning six of his last seven matches, Donar compiled an overall singles season record of 33-10. Included in his victories was an appearance in the semifinals of the Rolex Region 3 Indoor Championships. In doubles, while partnered with Falk, Donar compiled an overall record of 18-5. Donar finished the season and his Hurricane career as the No. 17 nationally ranked player in singles and as one-half of the national No. 12 team.

Two years after his four All-American years at the University of Miami, Donar teamed with fellow Hurricane Jonsson to win his only career ATP Tour title.
