Swim/Dive Wraps Up SMU Classic, Prepares for South Bend

DALLAS — The University of Miami swimming & diving team finished its trip to the SMU Classic at the Westside Aquatic Center Saturday.

Facing off against Michigan, Louisville, USC, UCLA and host SMU, Miami finished with 184.5 points.

Miami’s 200 medley relay team, comprised of seniors Christina Leander, Julia Schippert and Angela Algee alongside freshman Iliana Oikonomou, opened the night with a time of 1:45.04.

Junior Julie Suarez took fifth in the “A” final of the 500 free (4:53.01), while Schippert finished in fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.89). Leander took sixth in the “A” final of the 200 backstroke (2:02.40).

Sophomore Marcela Maric, who opened the competition with a fourth-place finish in the 1-meter, took second in Saturday night’s 3-meter final (290.60). Maric finished just behind Kristen Hayden of Michigan with another impressive performance.

Suarez touched the wall in a time of 50.99 in the 100 freestyle, while Algee split a fourth-place finish with Amy Okada of UCLA with a time of 2:00.76.

Leander added a sixth-place “A” final finish of 2:07.15 in the 200 UM before Miami’s 200 free relay team, comprised of freshman Manon Viguier, Oikonomou, Suarez and Algee, ended the meet’s final event with a time of 1:34.94.

Miami returns to training before a trip to South Bend, Ind., for a meet with host Notre Dame, Rutgers and Purdue on Oct. 28.
