Canes Wrap Up Day 1 at SMU Classic in Texas
DALLAS — The University of Miami swimming & diving team completed its first day at the SMU Classic from the Westside Aquatic Center Friday night.
Competing against USC, Louisville, Michigan, UCLA and host SMU, Miami finished the night with 82 points.
The Hurricanes’ first points on the evening were earned by junior Julie Suarez in the 200-yard freestyle. One of Miami’s top point-getters in a recent win over FIU, Suarez took sixth in the “A” final with a time of 1:51.06.
A sixth-place finish by freshman Iliana Oikonomou in the “A” final of the 50 freestyle was followed by a second-place showing by classmate Manon Viguier (23.38) in the “B” final of the same event.
Sophomore Marcela Maric, the lone Miami diver on the trip to the SMU Classic, took fourth in the 1-meter with a score of 258.25.
Senior Angela Algee scored points for Miami with a fifth-place finish in the “A” final of the 100 butterfly, and senior Christina Leander added to the Hurricanes’ point total with a time of 56.88 in the “A” final of the 100 backstroke.
Senior Julia Schippert (1:04.47) and sophomore Ianire Casarin (1:06.61) both competed in the 100 breaststroke before Miami’s entry in the 800 free relay – comprised of Viguier, Suarez, Algee and Casarin – touched the wall in a time of 7:30.21.
The SMU Classic continues from the Westside Aquatic Center Saturday.
