Men's Tennis On the Road at UNF Invitational
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team hit the road for the first time this season, playing in the University of North Florida Invitational Friday and Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla.
The Canes faced No. 65 Alabama Friday evening to open the event, then battled No. 74 UNC Wilmington Friday night for the second match of the day.
Jesse Flores got the match against Alabama started well for the Canes, picking up a quick 6-0, 6-2 victory over Grayson Goldin at the fourth position. No. 70 Christian Langmo was defeated by No. 106 Korey Lovett, 6-2, 6-4, to even the score at one apiece, then Bernard Tefel came up short, 6-2, 6-4, to Spencer Richey, giving Alabama the 2-1 lead. The final three matches of the day all went into three sets, as No. 107 Max Andrews battled No. 123 Becker O’Shaughnessey, but lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Then Alabama clinched the win when Mazen Osama defeated No. 23 Piotr Lomacki, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(4). At that time, freshman Fermin Calvo was in his third set with Danny Kerznerman, 3-6, 6-2, 2-2, but did not finish the match.
Against UNC Wilmington, the match also began with singles, where No. 23 Lomacki picked up Miami’s only victory. The sophomore defeated UNCW’s Santtu Leskinen in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. At the No. 2 position, Jesse Flores fell to Javier Restrepo, 7-6, 6-2, and at No. 3, No. 107 Max Andrews battled to three sets with Christiaan Van der Burgh, but came up short, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5). Bernard Tefel was defeated by Xander Veys, 6-2, 6-3, and Fermin Calvo lost to Agustin Savarino, 7-5, 6-2.
Miami is back in action on Saturday Jan. 23, when the Hurricanes will square off against UNCW once more at 11 a.m. and will wrap up the UNF Invitational against UNF at 3:30 p.m.
