Men's Tennis Concludes Play in Athens, Ga.
ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team wrapped up Sunday afternoon and the weekend at the 49th annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships with Jesse Flores advancing to the semifinals of the Division II bracket.
“Overall, it was a good first tournament. For the most part, I am very pleased with the way we competed. Our goal heading into this tournament was to stay in matches and compete from beginning to end regardless of adversity,” head coach Aljosa Piric said. “For the most part we accomplished that this weekend. Collectively we will continue to grow and improve as a team. Our guys will take a well-earned day off tomorrow and will go back to the practice courts first thing Tuesday morning.”
In singles play, Flores continued to stay hot in the quarterfinals against Miguel Este of Eastern Tennessee State, coming out victorious 7-5, 6-3. With the win, the Ontario native improved to 4-0 on the year in singles play and earned a spot in the semifinals against Louisville’s Parker Wynn. In the semifinals, Flores dropped the match, 0-6, 3-6.
No. 50 [6-seed] Christian Langmo and Piotr Lomacki opened up the morning with a battle against Georgia’s Walker Duncan and Jan Zielinski in the quarterfinals. The two Hurricanes lost their first match as teammates, 3-6.
No. 31 [5-seed] Lomacki found himself in a battle against No. 16 [2-seed] Wayne Montgomery of Georgia, in the top divisions quarterfinal round. Lomacki opened up the match strong taking the first set, 6-3. In the second set the native from Poland fell, 3-6, before falling in the final set, 2-6.
Overall, the Hurricanes went 12-11 during the three-day event, with a combined 11-8 singles record.
