Men's Tennis Stays Hot in Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team opened doubles play Saturday afternoon at the 49th annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships.

After a first round bye, No. 50 [6-seed] Christian Langmo and Piotr Lomacki teamed up for the first time this season earning a 7-6 tiebreaker win over Vanderbilt’s duo, Daniel Valent and Tate Allwardt. The duo will look to move into the quarterfinals tomorrow morning, when they face Walker Duncan and Jan Zielinski of Georgia at 9 a.m.

In the same round, senior Max Andrews made his season debut, after sitting out yesterday’s opening round singles matches due to injury. Teaming up with his classmate, Jesse Flores, the duo fell in a 7-6 tiebreaker against Kennesaw State’s Simon Pritchard and Manuel Castellanos.

In the Division I singles, round of 16, Flores got back on track, defeating Panu Virtanen of Vanderbilt, 7-5, 6-1, earning a spot in tomorrow’s quarterfinal round. The Ontario native will look to improve to 4-0 in singles play when he takes on Miguel Este of East Tennessee State at 10:30 a.m.

This afternoon, No. 31 [5-seed] Lomacki returned to the court for a match against Florin Bragusi of Oklahoma, in the round of 16. The native of Poland defeated Bragusi in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, improving to 3-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles, this season. Lomacki will face No. 16 [2-seed] Wayne Montgomery of Georgia at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow morning.

“It is good to have Piotr [Lomacki] and Jesse [Flores] advance to the quarterfinals of their respective draws. They both competed very well today and earned their way forward,” head coach Aljosa Piric said. “Our collective goal remains to grow as a team each day. We will learn from today, make individual corrections and will be ready to do it execute a little better in tomorrow’s matches.”

Niclas Genovese came up short in the Division III quarterfinals, against Victor Chaw of Lipscomb falling, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. In doubles play, Genovese and Kevin Bondar fell to Florida’s Joseph Guillin and McClain Kessler, 6-0.
