Lohan Wins 10K Singles Tournament in Portugal
CANTANHEDE, PORTUGAL – Coming off one of the greatest single seasons in the history of the illustrious University of Miami women’s tennis program, Sinead Lohan kept her strong play rolling into the summer.
The rising junior, competing as an amateur, won the championship of the Cantanhede $10,000 singles field in Portugal Sunday on artificial grass. Despite her amateur status, the win still goes down as the first tournament event victory of her career.
“I’m absolutely delighted to win. I was just taking every game and match one at a time,” Lohan said. “I felt a little uncomfortable at the start of the week because the surface was different from what I was playing on all year, but I just believed in myself, never doubted and stayed tough.”
In the final, Lohan took on Victoria Bosio of Argentina, the top seed in the tournament and the No. 425 player in the world. The Hurricane standout came away with a 6-3, 7-5 victory, winning the last four games of the match to rally back from a 3-5 deficit in the second set.
The win over Bosio was Lohan’s seventh victory in eight days at Clube Escola de Tenis de Cantanhede. The Waterford, Ireland, native beat three of the tournament’s top seven seeds, all of whom are ranked in the top 750 in the world, and knocked off one additional player with a WTA ranking.
Lohan, who lost just two sets en route to taking home the trophy, knocked off players from six different countries, including a fellow countrywoman in the semifinals. To advance out of the qualifying draw, Lohan had to come back both from dropping the first set and from trailing 1-4 in the third.
As a sophomore at Miami in 2015-16, Lohan tallied a 40-6 record to tie for the third-most wins in season in program history. She reached the NCAA Singles Championship semifinals and was named an ITA All-American, a First Team All-ACC selection and an All-ACC Academic Team pick.
“Working hard all year definitely got me to where I am,” Lohan said of her victory in Portugal.
