Six @CanesTrack Women Named All-ACC Academic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Six members of the University of Miami women’s track and field team were selected to the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field All-ACC Academic Team, as announced Wednesday by conference commissioner John Swofford.
Carolyn Brown, Dakota Dailey-Harris, Brittny Ellis, Jamika Glades, Ebony Morrison and Anna Runia were among the 54 student-athletes named All-ACC Academic for the 2016 outdoor track and field season.
“We are always proud of our student-athletes’ academic and athletic achievements,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “Carolyn, Dakota, Brittny, Jamika, Ebony and Anna are very dedicated on and off the track. They have been excellent examples of what a student-athlete should be and it is exciting to see them recognized for their efforts.”
Brown earned the first All-ACC Academic honor of her career. The freshman had a 3.16 GPA in her first year at Miami, earning Book Buster (3.0 GPA) and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (3.2 GPA) recognitions. Brown also made a significant impact on the track for the Hurricanes, competing at the NCAA Championships in the 4x100m. The Hampton, Va., native qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary in the 200m and was a member of Miami’s gold medal winning 4x100m relay at the ACC Championships that set a school record with a time of 43.63 seconds.
Dailey-Harris is one of three Canes to sweep All-ACC Academic honors in 2016, joined by Ellis and Morrison on both the indoor and outdoor academic all-conference teams. The senior, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport administration in May, earned the fourth All-ACC Academic award of her career. Dailey-Harris was a Second Team All-American in the high jump, placing 10th at the NCAA Championships. She also set the school record in the high jump in 2016, clearing 1.85m. Dailey-Harris, who finished her career with a 3.37 GPA, earned Book Buster (3.0), Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (3.2), Dean’s List (3.5) and Provost’s Honor Roll (3.75) accolades in her final semester at Miami.
Ellis picked up the second All-ACC Academic honor of her career, following up a selection during the indoor season with a spot on the 2016 outdoor All-ACC Academic team. The freshman earned First Team All-America honors after helping the Hurricanes finish seventh in the women’s 4x400m at the NCAA Championships. The Gurnee, Ill., native also helped the Canes run the fifth-fastest time in school history, posting a time of 3:29.68 in the semifinals at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Ellis was also a member of the 4x400m relay team that set an ACC Championship record at the 2016 conference meet with a time of 3:30:61. A nursing major, Ellis has a 3.71 GPA through one year of college.
Glades earned the third All-ACC Academic honor of her career. The senior, who earned Book Buster (3.0) and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (3.2) distinctions this spring, graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finished her career at Miami with a 3.24 GPA. A native for Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Glades qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary in both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles. She scored for the Hurricanes in both events at the ACC Championships, placing fourth in the 400m hurdles and seventh in the 100m hurdles.
Morrison rounds out the trio of Hurricanes to be named All-ACC Academic for both indoor and outdoor track and field. The junior transfer from Auburn has a 3.37 GPA and earned her second All-ACC Academic honor after a semester in which she was named a Book Buster (3.0) selection. The Miami native was a Second Team All-American in the 100m hurdles and on the 4x100m relay. Morrison also earned a bronze medal at the ACC Championships in the 100m hurdles and was a member of Miami’s ACC champion and school record setting 4x100m relay. She smashed the school record in the 100m hurdles at the NCAA East Preliminary, running a time of 12.76 seconds.
Runia is a first-time All-ACC Academic selection. The freshman has a 4.00 GPA for her career, earning Book Buster (3.0), Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (3.2), Dean’s List (3.5), Provost’s Honor Roll (3.75) and President’s Honor Roll (4.0) recognitions in both semesters of her first year at Miami. The Netherlands native ran the opening leg of the 4x400m relay at the NCAA East Preliminary, helping the Hurricanes advance to the NCAA Championships.
On Wednesday afternoon, senior Joseph Ryan was among the 49 honorees named All-ACC Academic for the 2016 outdoor track and field season.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the current academic year, will be released in July.
Every member the 2016 All-ACC Academic Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Team also earned All-Conference honors, was named an ACC Performer of the Week on at least one occasion and/or participated in at least one event at the NCAA Finals.
