Fundraising Underway for New Diving Platform

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming & diving program will continue momentum from its recent pool renovations with an extension of the 3-meter diving platform, allowing for a second 3-meter board as well as the ability for platform takeoffs.

The new Whitten University Center Pool, which reopened in January 2016, was built by the same company (Myrtha) that builds FINA pools for international swimming and diving competitions. It reopened six inches deeper as part of the renovation. Other improvements included a new chemical water purification system, new heating and cooling capability, a modern no-coping gutter system, a new deck finish, new starting blocks, new lane lines and new pool lighting.

With the 3-meter platform extension, the Hurricanes will be able to train for international synchronized events, in anticipation of potential NCAA synchronized competitions. A permanent, concrete 3-meter platform will replace the current 3-meter Durafirm diving stand. The new platform will allow divers to train more efficiently and safely.

The Hurricanes continue to maintain their place at the top of collegiate and national diving with two current student-athletes – David Dinsmore (USA) and Marcela Maric (Croatia) – and one former student-athlete, Sam Dorman (USA), competing at the 2016 World Cup Championships. Dinsmore earned a bronze medal in Men’s 10-meter while Dorman and his synchro partner clinched a spot for the USA in men’s 3-meter synchro at the Olympics. Miami divers are currently training for the upcoming Olympic Trials with hopes of making it to Rio and the Olympic Games. Current Miami student-athletes Briadam Herrera, Wally Layland and Dinsmore, as well as recent graduates Dorman and Cheyenne Cousineau, will all compete for a spot on Team USA this June.

“I am very proud of this program that has operated at such a high level for basically its entire existence, and at this point we are really in need of some updates,” head coach Randy Ableman said. “I appreciate our ‘U Family’ and all that they do for us to help continue this tradition of excellence.”

At the time of the release, $34,500 has been raised towards the $164,000 project.

The Ray C. Rude Supporting Foundation at the Community Foundation of Western Nevada will match all gifts up to $82,204.
