@CanesTrack Set for ACC Outdoor Championships
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program will compete against its conference foes at this weekend’s ACC Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The three-day meet, which showcases the best track and field student-athletes in the ACC, will be held Friday through Sunday at Mike Long Track on the Florida State campus. Miami’s women’s team heads to the ACC Championships ranked No. 17 by the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association, while the Hurricane men feature a talented group of athletes looking to make an impact at the conference’s biggest meet of the season.
Miami’s women enter the ACC Outdoor Championships as one of the top teams in the conference and as the 2015 ACC Indoor Champions. Their 17th ranking is the highest in the ACC and they are the only ACC team to appear in the USTFCCCA top 25. After finishing third a year ago, Miami’s women are hungry for a better result in 2016.
2015 ACC women’s track MVP Shakima Wimbley is one of several Hurricanes expected to make a big impact in Tallahassee this weekend. Wimbley is the ACC leader in both the 200m (23.06) and 400m (51.62), while teammate Aiyanna Stiverne ranks third in the ACC in the 200m (23.33) and second in the 400m (52.43). Both are also members of Miami’s ACC-leading 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay.
Ebony Morrison and Jamika Glades are two Canes who are expected to shine in the hurdles. Morrison leads the ACC in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.00 seconds, while Glades ranks second in the conference in the 400m hurdles with a time of 58.80 seconds.
Miami also has several standouts in the field events including pole vaulter Alysha Newman, high jumper Dakota Dailey-Harris and throwers Precious Ogunleye and Tiffany Okieme. Newman ranks second in the ACC in the pole vault (4.60m), while Dailey-Harris leads the conference in the high jump (1.85m). Ogunleye is fourth in the hammer throw and 10th in both the shot put and discus, while Okieme is third in the shot put and 12th in the hammer.
On the men’s side, Miami should see a lot of success in the field events, as a veteran group of jumpers and throwers will look to make their mark at the conference meet.
Senior jumpers John-Patrick Friday and Innocent Jacob are among the best in the ACC in their respective events. Friday ranks second in the ACC in the triple jump, third in the high jump and seventh in the long jump, while Jacob is fifth in the long jump.
Miami’s throwers are also some of the best in the conference, led by senior Isaiah Simmons and junior Gian Piero Ragonesi. Simmons ranks third in the ACC in the shot put and 11th in hammer, while Ragonesi is third in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Junior Carlos Mangum ranks sixth in the ACC in the hammer throw.
On the track, Henri Delauze ranks third in the ACC in the 400m with a time of 46.58 seconds, while TeQuille Jackson is eighth in the men’s 110m hurdles with a time of 14.27 seconds. Miami’s 4x100m relay is fifth in the ACC with a time of 40.78 seconds, while the 4x400m relay ranks sixth with a time of 3:09.96.
Competition begins Friday at 9:30 a.m. with the men’s hammer throw. Other highlights include the opening of the women’s heptathlon and men’s decathlon plus other field events, including the men’s and women’s pole vault competition and women’s hammer throw.
ESPN3 plans 3 ½ hours of live action on the event’s first two days, followed by three hours of finals coverage on the evening of Sunday, May 15. Tom Block returns to handle play-by-play for the second straight year. Lauryn Williams, a former Miami sprinter and a medalist at the 2004 Athens Olympics, will reprise her role as analyst following a successful debut at February’s Indoor Championships in Boston. ESPN3 will bring live action Friday and Saturday (May 13 and 14) from 6 until 9:30 p.m., followed by Sunday’s finals from 6 until 9 p.m.
Live results will be available throughout the event on the Championship website: http://theacc.co/otfliveresults.
Following this weekend’s conference meet, qualifying Canes will advance to the NCAA East Preliminary on May 26-28 to try and earn a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Championships (June 8-11).
