@CanesTrack Women Ranked 17th Nationally
NEW ORLEANS – The University of Miami’s women’s track and field team is ranked 17th in the latest edition of the USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings.
The Hurricanes are the only ranked ACC team in the USTFCCCA top 25 and have appeared in every edition of the USTFCCCA rankings during the outdoor season, peaking at No. 13 two weeks ago. The Canes also are the highest ranked ACC women’s team in the USTFCCCA outdoor top 25 for the fifth-consecutive week and sixth time this year.
The National Team Computer Rankings are compiled by a mathematical formula based on national descending order lists. Miami has 12 different marks that contributed to its team score of 111.49 points.
The Hurricanes have three fresh marks factoring into their team score as Shakima Wimbley, Jamika Glades and Tiffany Okieme’s performances from the LSU Invitational rank among the best in the country.
The ACC leader in the 200m, Wimbley’s time of 23.06 seconds ranks 22nd in the country, while Glades’ 400m hurdles time of 58.80 seconds is 43rd in the NCAA. Okieme’s season-best throw of 15.83m ranks 47th in the NCAA in the women’s shot put to round out the three new marks.
Wimbley is also a contributor to the team score in three other marks. Her 400m time of 51.62 seconds and as a member of Miami’s 4x100m relay (43.75 seconds) with Carolyn Brown, Aiyanna Stiverne and Ebony Morrison, as well as on Miami’s 4x400m relay (3:31.73) with Destiny Washington, Stiverne and Anna Runia. Stiverne’s 200m time of 23.33 seconds and 400m time of 52.43 seconds, as well as Morrison’s 100m hurdles time of 13.00 seconds, round out the nine scored marks the Canes have on the track.
The Hurricanes have four marks coming from the field events, including Okieme’s shot put throw from last weekend at LSU.
Alysha Newman’s mark of 4.60m in the women’s pole vault is the highest ranked mark of Miami’s 12, rating third in the NCAA. Fellow senior Dakota Dailey-Harris’ school record of 1.85m in the women’s high jump is sixth in the country. Precious Ogunleye’s mark of 59.49m in the women’s hammer throw completes the scored marks in the field events.
Miami will spend the week training in preparation for the ACC Outdoor Championships, scheduled for May 13-15 in Tallahassee, Fla.
