@CanesTrack Women Climb to No. 13

NEW ORLEANS – The University of Miami’s women’s track and field team is No. 13 in the latest edition of the USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings.

The Hurricanes’ No. 13 ranking is the highest Miami has been ranked during the 2016 season, surpassing last week’s previous season-best No. 14 ranking. The Canes also are the highest ranked ACC women’s team in the USTFCCCA outdoor Top 25 for the third-consecutive week and fourth time this year.

The National Team Computer Rankings are compiled by a mathematical formula based on national descending order lists. Marks from the previous outdoor season are counted until enough data can be collected from the current season. Then, past data is dropped and only data from the current campaign is used from there on out.

Miami has 12 different marks that contributed to its team score of 123.84 points. Four of the 12 scored marks were recorded this season, while the remaining eight carry over from 2015 performances.

Three of the four marks from this season were recorded at the 2016 Hurricane Alumni Invitational. Alysha Newman’s NCAA-leading mark of 4.60m in the women’s pole vault was the highlight of the weekend. The senior set a new school record, ACC record and Canadian national record with her vault that currently ranks fourth in the world.

Fellow senior Dakota Dailey-Harris set a school record in the women’s high jump, clearing a personal-best 1.85m, while the women’s 4x100m relay of Shakima Wimbley, Carolyn Brown, Aiyanna Stiverne and Ebony Morrison turned in a season-best time of 43.75 seconds that leads the ACC and ranks third in school history. Stiverne’s 400m run from the Hurricane Twilight Invitational rounds out the scored marks from this season contributing to Miami’s team score.

The Hurricanes also have Wimbley’s 400m and 200m times from a year ago that rank first and second, respectively, in the data used for the rankings. In addition, the Canes have 100m hurdles times from Morrison and Jamika Glades and Glades’ top 400m hurdles time from a year ago. The Hurricanes’ top 4x400m relay time of 3:30.22 from last season rounds out the track events adding to Miami’s score.

The Hurricanes also carried two marks over from the 2015 season in the throws. Tiffany Okieme and Precious Ogunleye wrap up the scoring for Miami. Okieme’s throw of 15.90m in the shot put and Ogunleye’s mark of 61.17m in the hammer throw complete the 12 marks contributing to Miami’s team score.

Miami will compete at the Tom Jones Invitational on April 22 in Gainesville, Fla., and the LSU Invitational on April 30 in Baton Rouge, La. The ACC Outdoor Championships are scheduled for May 13-15 in Tallahassee, Fla.
