Canes Hosting Hurricane Alumni Invitational
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program will host its final home meet of the 2016 outdoor season, the Hurricane Alumni Invitational, this Friday and Saturday.
A two-day meet, the Hurricane Alumni Invitational is the highlight of Miami’s three outdoor meets this season. In addition to the track and field action, Miami welcomes back its track alumni for an annual reunion weekend.
“It is always exciting when the alumni come back,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “It will be great to have All-Americans like Devon Hill, Kelsey Balkwill and Alyssa McClure back on the track and to have Lauryn [Williams] on our ESPN3 broadcast again. We have a ton of athletes who always come back to say hello and watch the meet and support the Canes. It’s always good to see them.”
On Saturday night at 6:10 p.m., the Hurricanes will honor 16 seniors for all their contributions to the track and field program. Seniors and their families will be brought onto the infield at Cobb Stadium to be presented with a senior gift and recognized in front of Hurricanes fans in commemoration of their careers at Miami.
“We are excited to recognize our seniors,” Deem said “It will be great to see them compete at home one more time.”
FAU, FIU, Georgetown, Harvard, Maine, Pitt, Syracuse and Villanova highlight the list of schools set to compete at this weekend’s Hurricane Alumni Invitational. Action begins Friday at 10 a.m., with the decathlon 100m dash, while the javelin throw and hammer throw are scheduled for 2 p.m.
Saturday’s action begins at 9 a.m., with the heptathlon long jump. Field events begin at 10:15 a.m., with the men’s high jump and running events open at 12:30 p.m., with the unseeded section of the women’s 1,500-meter run.
The Hurricane Alumni Invitational will be broadcast live on ESPN3 from 3-6 p.m., featuring exciting seeded sections of the 4×100-meter relay, 1,500-meter run, 100-meter and 110-meter hurdles, 100-meters, 400-meters, 800-meters and the 400-meter hurdles on the track and several exciting field events in the throws and jumps. The Voice of the Miami Hurricanes, Joe Zagacki, will handle play-by-play duties, while Olympic gold medalist, 2004 NCAA 100m champion and UM Sports Hall of Fame member Lauryn Williams will provide analysis.
