@CanesTrack Ready for Texas & Florida Relays
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program will compete at two of the top outdoor meets in the United States this week at the 2016 Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and the 2016 Pepsi Florida Relays.
The Canes will travel to Austin, Texas, to compete from Thursday, March 31, through Saturday, April 2, at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Miami athlete also will compete in Gainesville, Fla., from Thursday, March 31, through Saturday, April 2, at Percy Beard Track.
Reigning ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week Alysha Newman is one of several Hurricanes to watch at the Texas Relays. Newman registered a pole vault mark of 4.50 meters (14-9) at the Hurricane Twilight Invitational that ranks first in the nation and is within sight of the ACC record of 4.58 (15-0.25) that has stood since 2006. She bested her previous school-record mark of 4.41m and hit the Olympic standard to put herself in position to possibly represent Canada in this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio.
The Ontario native currently ranks fourth in the world in the women’s pole vault. Her efforts were part of a big weekend in field events for the Hurricane women, who also saw Dakota Dailey-Harris post a school record and nation-leading mark of 1.84 meters in the high jump.
The Canes will also run outstanding sprinters Shakima Wimbley and Aiyanna Stiverne, as well as hurdler Ebony Morrison in Austin this weekend. Miami is entered in the women’s 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m invitational and 1600m sprint medley relay.
On the men’s side, Miami will have jumpers John-Patrick Friday and Innocent Jacob, as well as standout throwers Gian Piero Ragonesi, Carlos Mangum and Isaiah Simmons in action. Ragonesi is the ACC leader in both the shot put and discus, while Mangum is second in the ACC in the hammer. Jacob ranks third in the men’s long jump, while Friday is second in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump in the ACC.
Longhorn Network (LHN) will provide four days of intensive coverage of the 2016 Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. The network’s 14-hours of coverage includes collegiate and professional competition in heptathlon, decathlon, hurdles, long distance, sprints, field events and more, between March 30 to April 2, airing live from Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. This will mark the fifth consecutive year LHN has carried the event.
Miami will also have several outstanding athletes in action at Florida Relays. On the women’s side, the Canes will have hurdler Stefani Kerrison and distance runner Gabrielle Hesslau leading the way. Miami’s men will look to see big performances from sprinters Isaiah Taylor and Henri Delauze, as well as distance runner Sean Grossman and decathlete Andreas Christodoulou.
Florida Relays will be streamed on SEC Network+. You can watch Friday’s action HERE and Saturday’s events HERE.
This week will be the first time the Hurricanes compete away from home during the 2016 outdoor season, having hosted both the Hurricane Invitational and the Hurricane Twilight Invitational over the previous two weekends. Miami is also going to have a split squad for the second time this year, but first during the outdoor campaign. The Hurricanes had a split squad during the indoor season, sending competitors to both the Tyson Invitational and the LSU High Performance Meet on Feb. 12-13.
