@CanesTrack Hosting Hurricane Invitational
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program opens its 2016 outdoor season this weekend at the Hurricane Invitational.
A two-day meet, the Hurricane Invitational is the first of three home meets held at Miami’s Cobb Stadium this season. Miami also hosts the Hurricane Twilight Meet on March 25 and the Hurricane Alumni Invitational on April 8-9.
“We’re excited about outdoor season and excited to be at home,” Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. “We can really get ready for our outdoor championship season by staying at home and getting good training during the week and then competing at home on the weekends.”
Boston University, FIU, George Mason and Virginia Tech highlight the list of schools set to compete at this weekend’s Hurricane Invitational. Action begins Friday at 2 p.m. with the javelin, while the running events are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. with the women’s 3000m steeplechase. Saturday’s field events begin at 1 p.m. with the men’s discus, women’s shot put, women’s pole vault and the men’s and women’s long jump. The final day’s running events also begin at 1 p.m. with the women’s 4x100m relay.
The Hurricanes head into the outdoor season fresh off an exciting indoor campaign that saw seven Canes compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships and the Miami women earn the ACC Indoor Championship.
Indoor All-Americans Dakota Dailey-Harris, Ebony Morrison, Alysha Newman, Precious Ogunleye, Tiffany Okieme and Shakima Wimbley will be leaders on the women’s side, while Indoor All-American Carlos Mangum and All-ACC selections John-Patrick Friday, Innocent Jacob and Gian Piero Ragonesi are expected to be impact performers for the men.
