Three Canes Qualify for 2016 NCAA Championships
ATLANTA — Three University of Miami divers qualified for the 2016 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships on Day 1 of Zone B qualifiers at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center Monday.
Sophomore diver Briadam Herrera, who won the third and fourth gold medals of his career at the recent 2016 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships, qualified with a strong showing in the finals of the 3-meter.
After posting a score of 338.65 to finish in 13th in the preliminary round, Herrera jumped a whopping nine spots to finish fourth with a score of 768.40.
Herrera earned All-America recognition in the 1-meter in his first career trip to the NCAA Championships in 2015.
Not to be outdone, freshman Carolyn Chaney and senior Kara McCormack both clinched a trip back to Atlanta for the NCAA Championships from March 16-19.
Miami had four women divers qualify for the finals.
Chaney finished in fifth place in the 1-meter with a score of 577.40, while McCormack posted a score of 569.50 – good for seventh place.
Chaney will be making her first trip to the NCAA Championships, while McCormack will be aiming for her fourth career All-America honors.
Sophomore Wally Layland (551.55) finished in 11th, while freshman Marcela Maric (548.80) was one spot behind in 12th.
Zone B qualifiying continues Tuesday from the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center with the men’s 1-meter and women’s 3-meter.
