Gonzalez Competing at Davis Cup This Weekend

Former University of Miami men’s tennis player Wilfredo Gonzalez is representing his home country of Guatemala in the 2016 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas this weekend at Juan Camilo Mouriño Terrazo Stadium, in San Francisco de Campeche, Mexico.

In Group II Americas first round, Gonzalez played a tough five-set match against Lucas Gomez of Mexico, but came up short, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Davis Cup began in 1900 as a competition between USA and Great Britain. It’s now the world’s largest annual international team competition in sport, with 135 nations taking part in 2016. Davis Cup is structured with a 16-nation World Group, contested over four weekends during the year. The remaining countries are then divided into three regional zones depending on their location.
