Alysha Newman Named ACC Performer of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Miami track and field program has competed in four meets during the 2016 indoor season and a Hurricane has been selected ACC Performer of the Week following each of those four meets.

Alysha Newman was named ACC women’s Field Performer of the Week on Tuesday following her stellar showing at the Tyson Invitational over the weekend. For the second consecutive week, Newman posted a personal-best mark of 4.50m (14-9) in the women’s pole vault to finished third at the Tyson Invitational.

Newman’s 4.50m vault at the Tyson Invitational tied her personal-best and school record mark set a week earlier at the Armory Track Invitational. Newman ranks second in the ACC and third in the NCAA in the women’s pole vault this season. The mark is also ninth all-time among collegiate women and ranks 21st in the world this year.

Newman has had a stellar 2016 indoor season, winning the women’s pole vault at the Nittany Lion Challenge with a meet record mark of 4.30m and winning the women’s pole vault at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet. She also placed second at the Armory Track Invitational and third this past weekend at the Tyson Invitational, giving her four Top 3 finishes on the season.

The ACC Performer of the Week award is Newman’s first in 2016 and second for her career. She joins three-time ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week Shakima Wimbley to make up the four Hurricane ACC weekly award winners this season.

The Hurricanes will spend the rest of this week training in preparation for the ACC Indoor Championships on Feb. 25-27 in Boston.
