Wimbley Wins Third ACC Performer of the Week
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Miami track and field program has competed in three meets during the 2016 indoor season and junior Shakima Wimbley has been named ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week after each of those three meets.
Wimbley played a key role in helping the Hurricanes win the women’s team championship at the 2016 Armory Track Invitational. The junior won the 400m dash at the Armory Track Invitational, leading a 70-runner field with a time of 52.90 seconds to break the 53-second mark for the first time this season.
The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native then helped the Canes run a season-best time of 3:36.41 to finish second in the invitational section of the women’s 4x400m relay. Wimbley currently has the fastest 200m time in the ACC, ranks second in the ACC in the 400m and helped the Canes post the best 4x400m time in the conference this season.
Wimbley also won ACC Performer of the Week following her victory in the 400m at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet and her win in the 200m at the Nittany Lion Challenge with an ACC-leading time of 23.33 seconds.
A three-time ACC Performer of the Week in 2015, Wimbley picks up her third ACC weekly award of the 2016 season. A standout sprinter, Wimbley ran the fifth-fastest indoor 200m a year ago (23.08) and the fourth-best indoor 400m time (51.82). Wimbley, who was the ACC Indoor Champion in the 200m and was All-ACC First Team in both the 200m and 400m, represented Miami at the NCAA Indoor Championships. As a sophomore, she earned Second Team Indoor All-America Honors in both the 400m and the 4x400m relay.
Wimbley and the Hurricanes will spend the rest of the week training in preparation for the Tyson Invitational and the LSU High Performance Meet this coming weekend.
