@CanesFutbol Captain's Corner: Oct. 22, 2015

CORAL GABLES, Fla. The captains of the University of Miami soccer team for the 2015 season are writing a blog for HurricaneSports.com this year called Captain’s Corner.

Thursday, before the Hurricanes take on Syracuse at 8 p.m. on SUN Sports, Natalie Moik checks in with the latest installment of the blog. The senior midfielder/defender from Cologne, Germany looks back on Miami’s trip to Virginia Tech and forward to the team’s matches at Syracuse and Boston College . . .

Hi, Canes fans. This past weekend our team experienced something that was new for us this season. We traveled to Virginia Tech where cold weather welcomed us at the airport. While the changing colors of the leaves and the cool wind brought back memories from home for some of the girls, fall is a season our Florida natives rarely experience.

Saturday was game day! We had a short training session in the morning to go over some tactics, and also to get used to the weather conditions in Virginia. At 7 p.m. we put our puffy coats and beanies to the side to play against No. 12/7 Virginia Tech. We faced a strong team that pressured us right from the start. We conceded two goals in the first half and were unable to recover from it, unlike we had managed to do in the past games. Although we played a better second half, Virginia Tech scored a third goal and the game ended at 3-0.

After a 45-minute bus ride and two planes rides, we arrived back in Miami on Sunday afternoon. After a day off to recover on Monday, everyone was ready for a competitive practice the next day. Although our Tuesday practices are usually the hardest ones of the week, it’s fun to get out on the field and compete with and against competitive teammates.

Our Wednesday morning session was short, since we had to pack our warm gear again to travel north to New York. We will face Syracuse on Thursday night and Boston College on Sunday afternoon. This will be our last away trip of the season and the last one in our collegiate career for me and my fellow seniors!

Hopefully next week Gianna can report on a successful weekend for us!
