Tefel & Bondar Win in Doubles at Princeton
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of Miami pair Bernard Tefel and Kevin Bondar won their first round of the doubles bracket Friday at the Ivy Plus Tournament in Princeton, N.J.
The Canes duo downed Maverick Lin and Dylan Brown from Cornell 8-6 to move on in the blind draw 64-team single elimination bracket. Miami faces Shawn Hadavi and Christopher Grant from Columbia at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
In the other doubles matchup, Jesse Flores and Nile Clark came up short, 8-3, to Nick Bybel and Bryan Adams from Bucknell.
Tefel was defeated 6-1, 7-5, by Kial Kaiser (Princeton) in singles, but game back with a hard-fought, 6-3, 6-7(5), 10-8 win over Dominic Bechard of Tulsa to move on in his consolation bracket. Tefel will face Pablo Alvarez (Buffalo) at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Transfer Flores was also defeated in the first round, falling to Diego Vives (Princeton) in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, then moved on in the consolation bracket after a walkover against Vim De Alwis of Penn. On Saturday at 11 a.m., Flores will continue play against Mitchell Pritchard (Tulsa).
Sophomore Kevin Bondar also picked up a win on Friday, defeating George Cartledge (Virginia Tech), 7-5, 6-3, after coming up short to Alex Hagermoser of Yale, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round. Bondar faces Ismael Lahlou (Penn) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Nile Clark and Niclas Genovese each had a pair of losses on Friday. Clark lost to Aaron Sandberg (Brown), 6-3, 6-3, then battled to a tie-break with Zach Lessen (Penn), 6-2, 4-6, 10-4. Genovese fell 6-1, 6-1 to Sergio Arevelillo (Buffalo) then 6-4, 6-3 to Fedor Andrienko (Yale). On Saturday, Genovese will play Stefan Lugonjic (Indiana) at 11:30 a.m. and Clark will face Theophile Lanthiez (Old Dominion) at 2 p.m.
