Wagner and Lohan Named ITA All-Americans
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Stephanie Wagner and Sinead Lohan of the University of Miami women’s tennis team were among the 43 players named 2015 All-Americans by the ITA Thursday. Both received the honor as singles players, two of 25 to do so.
Miami was one of just 19 schools with an All-American this season and one of 14 with multiple honorees. The Hurricanes one of only seven teams with at least two All-Americans in singles.
“This is just another amazing accomplishment to add to Steffi and Sinead’s seasons,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “I am so proud of these two ladies.”
One of 10 juniors to be named an All-American, including one of five to garner the honor in singles, Wagner reeled in accolade after accolade this season. In addition to being an All-American, she was the ITA National Player to Watch, the ITA Southeast Region Player to Watch, a First Team All-ACC pick, and was named ACC Player of the Week March 10.
The Amberg, Germany native went 21-8 in singles in 2015, recording an 11-3 mark in ACC play and a 13-4 record at the No. 1 spot. Wagner picked up 14 victories against ranked opponents, with nine against players in the top 75, including two in the top 10.
Wagner became the seventh player in program history to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship, taking down top-ranked Robin Anderson of UCLA in the quarterfinals to get there. Wagner ended the season ranked No. 9 in the country and was in the top 11 for the entire duration of the season.
Additionally, Wagner was one of just 31 players to compete in the both the NCAA Singles Championship and the NCAA Doubles Championship, making the field of the latter with senior Lina Lileikite. The pair finished the 2015 season at No. 21 and spent the whole season in the top 25. Wagner was one of 15 players in the nation to end the year in the top 25 in both singles and doubles.
Lohan was one of five freshmen in the nation to earn All-America honors and one of just four true freshmen. Only three freshmen were named All-Americans in singles. Lohan finished the year with an outstanding singles record of 23-4 and she became the first player in program history to win ACC Freshman of the Year.
During her run to the NCAA Singles Championship quarterfinals, Lohan knocked off three seniors ranked above her, including fifth-ranked Lauren Herring of Georgia in the opening round. She ended her opening campaign as a Hurricane ranked No. 20 in the country in singles, the third highest of any freshman in the nation.
Ranked in the top 45 the entire season, Lohan went 11-4 against ranked opponents, with seven victories over top-60 opponents. The Waterford, Ireland native played every dual match of her freshman season at either the No. 1 or No. 2 position and finished with a 17-3 mark, including 10-2 in the ACC.
Lohan, a Second Team All-ACC selection, led the Hurricanes in singles wins and overall wins in her first season on the team, posting a 14-9 record in doubles play.
Wagner and Lohan are the 30th and 31st All-Americans in program history. The Hurricanes, who went 18-7 (12-2 ACC) in 2015 and reached the Sweet 16 for the 10th straight season, will have three All-Americans on the roster next season. Junior Clementina Riobueno earned the honor as a doubles player in 2014.
