@MiamiTrack Set for ACC Outdoor Championships
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program will compete against fellow conference members at the 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Miami’s women will feature three individual champions from the 2014 ACC Outdoor Championships. Senior thrower Lea Johnson will look to defend her hammer throw title, while junior Jamika Glades and sophomore Shakima Wimbley will look to defend their 400m hurdles and 200m championships, respectively. Wimbley, along with senior Kayann Richards, made up two-fourths of Miami’s gold medal winning women’s 4x100m relay at last year’s ACC Championships and they will look to lead the Hurricanes’ relay again in 2015.
Others to watch on the women’s side include senior sprinter/hurdler Kelsey Balkwill, junior All-American pole vaulter Alysha Newman, standout junior throwers Precious Ogunleye and Tiffany Okieme, junior high jumper Dakota Dailey-Harris and freshman heptathlete Amy Taintor.
The Hurricane men will look to 2015 ACC Indoor Champion hurdler Christian Cook and standout junior jumper John-Patrick Friday to lead them in Tallahassee this weekend. Sophomore thrower Carlos Mangum will also be counted on to score big points in the hammer throw, while freshmen sprinters Henri Delauze and Robert Grant are looking to make a splash in their first outdoor conference championship.
This weekend’s ACC Outdoor Championships will also serve as the 2015 track and field debut for star hurdler Artie Burns. The 2014 ACC Indoor Champion and second team All-American in the 60m hurdles, Burns is set to compete in the 110m hurdles, the 400m hurdles and on the men’s 4x100m relay.
The 2015 ACC Outdoor Championships are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday at Mike Long Track on the campus of Florida State University.
Competition begins Thursday at 10 a.m. with the men’s hammer throw. Other highlights include the first four stages of the women’s heptathlon and men’s decathlon, and other field events, including the men’s and women’s long jump competition. The women’s 10,000-meter finals are set for 8:10 p.m., followed by the men’s 10,000 meters at 8:55 p.m.
ESPN3 coverage will be streamed lived on theACC.com from 7-9:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 14 and Friday, May 15; and from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, with Tom Block handling play-by-play and former Olympic gold medalist and decathlon world record holder Dan O’Brien serving as analyst.
Following this weekend’s trip to Tallahassee, the Hurricanes will focus on preparing for the NCAA East Preliminary and the NCAA Championships to close out a stellar 2015 outdoor season.
