@MiamiTrack Excited for Florida Relays
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami track and field program travels to Gainesville this weekend to compete against some of the best teams in the country.
The Hurricanes will compete in the Pepsi Florida Relays at Percy Beard Track at James G. Pressly Stadium on the University of Florida campus. Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem is eager to see how her team stacks up against some of the top programs in the United States.
“There is a lot of great competition this weekend with quality schools from all over the country,” Deem said. “It will really give us a good test and an indication of where we are after our hard work the past couple of weeks. I am really excited about the meet. It’s a great weekend of track and field for the state of Florida.”
Miami will have standouts on the track and in the field events this weekend. Men’s thrower Carlos Mangum heads to Gainesville fresh off being named the ACC Men’s Outdoor Field Performer of the Week. The sophomore earned the honor after winning the men’s hammer throw at the FSU Relays with a school record mark of 63.50m that ranks 16th nationally.
The women’s throwers also had a strong showing in Tallahassee, led by junior Precious Ogunleye. The junior placed second in the women’s hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 61.17m that ranks third in UM history and earned a victory in the women’s discus, posting a personal-best mark of 51.32m that ranks third in UM history.
On the track, Miami will look to Shakima Wimbley, Kelsey Balkwill, Jamika Glades and Taneisha Cordell to lead the women, while the men’s 4x400m relay hopes to continue its early success during the 2015 outdoor season.
The collegiate portion of the Florida Relays begins Friday at noon with the women’s hammer throw. The first running event Friday is the women’s 100m hurdles at 12:15 p.m. Saturday’s track action begins at noon with the women’s sprint hurdles relay, while the field events open at 10 a.m. with the invitational portion of the women’s hammer.
The SEC Network will have all the coverage for the collegiate competition both Friday and Saturday. Live results will be available through Delta Timing and can be found at the conclusion of each day on Florida Relays Central.
