@CanesMensTennis Rolls Past Boston College
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes men’s tennis team dominated in a 6-1 victory against Boston College Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla.
“We have had some tough losses as of late and it’s very rewarding for our guys to close out a match,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “It was a tough match, we didn’t have our full line-up and everyone else stepped-up in singles, it was good to see the guys come through in some difficult moments.”
In doubles play, senior Wilfredo Gonzalez and freshman Kevin Bondar battled and prevailed against Conor Mullins and Philip Nelson, 8-6.
Sophomore Bernard Tefel and freshman Andrew Harrington were overpowered by Matt Wagner and Jeffrey Melvin and fell, 8-2. The freshman duo of Nile Clark and Alexander Fahnehjelm were unable to develop a consistent rhythm against Hank Workman and Kyle Childree falling, 8-4, clinching the doubles point for the Eagles.
After the doubles point, the Canes came out with dynamic energy and won six straight matches.
At the number one singles spot, Christian Langmo fell in the first set against Philip Nelson but rolled in the next two sets winning his match, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Senior Henrique Tsukamoto dominated his match in straight sets against Kyle Childree, 6-2, 6-2. Sophmore Tefel imposed his style from the start in a straight-set victory against Will Turner, 6-1, 6-3.
“Bernard [Tefel] has been playing very well the last couple of matches,” said Rincon. “Whenever he has energy out there he is a very strong player.”
Freshman Clark came out on top in a tough match against Kent Mukai, 7-5, 7-5. Fellow freshman Niclas Genovese won in three sets against Matt Wagner, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
Senior Gonzalez clinched the win for the Canes after having to come back after falling in the second set, but dominated the final set against Hank Workman winning, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.
The Canes will now be on the road, as they face No. 32 Florida State on Friday, April 3 at 3 p.m. and No. 23 Louisville on Sunday, April 5 at 12 p.m.
