@CanesMensTennis Wins Both in Doubleheader

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team won both matches of Tuesday’s doubleheader against Valparaiso and Quinnipiac at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla. 

Miami vs. Valparaiso

In the first match of the doubleheader, the Canes faced Valparaiso, winning the match in dominant fashion, 6-1.

The dual match began with doubles play, where senior Wilfredo Gonzalez and freshman Kevin Bondar downed Dave Bacalla and Danny Oakes, 6-3. To clinch the doubles point, the freshman duo of Nile Clark and Alexander Fahnehjelm won a tight match over Lucas Waak and Garrett Gardner, 6-4.

Senior Henrique Tsukamoto and freshman Piotr Lomacki were unable to develop a rhythm against Jeffrey Schorsch and Charlie Emhardt and fell, 6-1.

In the top singles spot, #74 Lomacki dispatched his rival Dave Bacalla, 6-4, 6-3. Fellow freshman Niclas Genovese also won in straight sets defeating Michael Savaglio, 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Bondar pushed aside any challenges from his opponent Garrett Gardner, 6-2, 6-2 

Senior Gonzalez rolled after a tough first set to defeat Kyle Dunn, 6-4, 6-1. Lone sophomore Bernard Tefel dominated his match against Charlie Emhardt, giving the Canes another straight-set win, 6-3, 6-0.

Senior Tsukamoto fell in a tough match to Jeffrey Schorsch, 6-2, 6-2.

Miami vs. Quinnipiac

Later in the evening, the Canes faced Quinnipiac and rolled past the Bobcats in another dominant 6-1 win.

In doubles play, senior Henrique Tsukamoto and Piotr Lomacki controlled play in their match against Jonas Kuwert and Luke Roser and won, 6-3. Senior Wilfredo Gonzalez and Kevin Bondar also found success and defeated Kei Ezaka and Julian Rozenstein, 6-3. Freshmen Nile Clark and Alexander Fahnehjelm dominated their match against Carlos Fernandez and Ryoma Haraguchi, 6-1.

In singles action, #74 Lomacki battled in a tough match but prevailed against Kei Ezaka, 6-3, 7-5. Lomacki has now secured seven straight singles victories and is 8-3 this spring.

Fellow freshman Christian Langmo was able to persevere and won in straight sets in a competitive match against Jonas Kuwert, 6-4, 6-4. Freshman Niclas Genovese continued the winning ways. After a tough first set Genovese imposed his style of play in the second set to defeat Luke Roser, 7-5, 6-0.

Freshman Andrew Harrington played a consistent game and was able to close out his opponent Sebastian Barbero in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. Sophomore Bernard Tefel, a local Miami native, controlled play in another straight-set victory against Kyle Alper, 6-2, 6-4.

Freshman Bondar fell in a tight match against Julian Rozenstein, 7-6, 6-3.

Later this week, the Canes will travel to North Carolina for a pair of ACC match-ups. Miami will face No. 19 North Carolina on Friday, March 13 at 3 p.m. and then will face No. 2 Duke on Sunday, March 15 at 12 p.m.
