@CanesMensTennis Rolls Past GW 6-1
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team nearly swept George Washington in a dominant 6-1 victory at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables, Fla. The Canes won five singles matches and a pair of doubles matches.
“It was a really good win for us,” said head coach Mario Rincon. “George Washington has a lot of depth and they have good players in singles and doubles.”
The day began with doubles play where the Canes found early success. Senior Henrique Tsukamoto and freshman Piotr Lomacki easily dispatched Francisco Dias and Danil Zelenkov in an 8-3 win. The freshman duo of Nile Clark and Christian Langmo clinched the doubles point for the Canes with an 8-3 victory against Christos Hadjigeorgiou and Cahit Kapukiran.
Senior Wilfredo Gonzalez and Kevin Bondar were up 6-5 over Chris Fletcher and Chris Reynolds when play was called.
In singles play, the Canes were propelled by freshman Bondar, who dominated his opponent Christos Hadjigeorgiou in a quick match, 6-1, 6-1.
“We have been in the gym a lot and working on out endurance and I think that was an advantage that we had today,” said Bondar. “I was determined in the first couple games to play consistently and see what weapons my opponent had. I think that paid off and I was able to outlast my opponent.”
Senior Tsukamoto followed that performance with a consistent match against Chris Reynolds. Tsukamoto dominated pace and controlled the match in a straight set victory, 6-2, 6-4. Fellow senior Gonzalez also rolled in his first set and quelled his opponent Chris Fletcher in a second set tiebreak, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6(1).
No. 75 Lomacki found success and won in a consistent match against Danil Zelenkov, 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore Bernard Tefel persevered in a tough match against Cahit Kapukiran and came out with the victory in a 10-point tiebreak, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.
Freshman Langmo was unable to close out in his singles match against Francisco Dias falling, 6-4, 7-6(2).
In an additional match, Clark closed out his opponent Jabari Stafford in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6(2).
“Our guys did great and competed really well, I’m really happy to see them come through today,” added Rincon.
The Canes will open ACC play on Sunday, March 8, against Georgia Tech at 12 p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
