Herrera Captures Second Gold Medal in Atlanta
ATLANTA — Freshman Briadam Herrera continued his breakout week at the 2015 ACC Championships Friday night, capturing his second gold medal of the event with a first-place finish in the 3-meter.
Herrera, who finished fifth in the morning’s 3-meter preliminary round, delivered a score of 400.20 to earn his second trip to the podium. The Havana native opened the Championships with the top finish in the 1-meter.
Miami divers have totaled six medals this week, including two gold (both by Herrera), three silver (Sam Dorman – 1-meter, Thea Vock – 1-meter & 3-meter) and one bronze medal (Cheyenne Cousineau – 3-meter).
Sophomores Angela Algee and Cameron Davis earned Miami points early in the swimming events, with Davis finishing the 400 IM in a time of 4:25.11 and Algee – who qualified for the “B” final of the 100 butterfly – touching the wall with a time of 53.65.
Junior captain My Fridell finished the 100 fly in 54.49 to add to Miami’s point total.
Freshman Ksenia Yuskova, competing in her first ACC Championships after transferring to Miami midyear, took fifth in the “B” final of the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:47.87. Freshman Julie Suarez qualified for the “C” final and finished in 1:48.82. Sophomore Julia Schippert continued Miami’s momentum with a time of 1:02.41 in the 100 breaststroke.
Miami ended Day Three with 365 points and in eighth place in the overall standings.
The 2015 ACC Championships continue from the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center on Saturday.
