@MiamiSwimming Adds to Medal Count on Day Two
ATLANTA — Senior Thea Vock continued her impressive run at the 2015 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships Thursday, capturing her second medal in the 1-meter event.
Vock, who opened the Championships with a silver-medal performance, captured her second medal with a score of 333.85 – finishing just behind first-place Katrina Young (337.60).
Senior Cheyenne Cousineau, who qualified with a score of 286.10 in the morning preliminaries, finished fifth with a score of 313.05. Freshman Wally Layland ended in 14th with a score of 267.60.
Seven different Hurricanes posted career-best times in the lanes during the morning’s preliminaries, while two – sophomores Angela Algee and Cameron Davis – earned a trip back for the night’s final rounds.
“Today was a great day,” head swimming coach Andy Kershaw said. “We’re off to a great start. The team has a great attitude, great spirit, and they’re showing a lot of character.”
Davis’ time of 4:51.39 in the 500-yard freestyle earned her a trip to the finals, where she posted an even better finish – 4:50.09.
“It was a picture-perfect race,” Kershaw said. “She did exactly what we practiced all year. I’m really proud she was able to bring it home with a lot of speed at the end.”
Algee matched Davis, swimming even faster during the night’s finals (22.86) than she did during the morning session (23.01).
“She dropped time over the course of the day, which is really hard to do in that event,” Kershaw said. “We got two great swims out of those two, scoring some good points for us.”
Miami’s 200-yard freestyle relay team capped the night in spectacular fashion, breaking the school record from 2013 in a time of 1:31.66. Freshman Julie Suarez and Rebeka Repman, Algee and senior Heather Arseth delivered an impressive performance to cap the second day of competition.
“That was a lot of fun,” Kershaw said. “We had a great lead-off out of Julie, Rebeka came through in the second leg, we got great split from Angela and Heather brought us home, doing exactly as a senior should.”
Miami ended Thursday in sixth place with 267 points.
“The team is really excited about our score, we’re sitting in sixth, and I know we have a strong day for us – but a lot of other teams do too. We’re going to keep battling,” Kershaw said.
