Herrera Captures Gold Medal to Open ACC's

ATLANTA – Paced by the first career ACC title from freshman Briadam Herrera, the Miami Hurricanes diving team delivered a sparkling performance on the first day of the 2015 ACC Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.

Miami captured four medals in all, including the top two spots in the 1-meter event thanks to standout performances from Herrera and senior Sam Dorman. Herrera’s eye-popping final score (453.85) won the Havana native his first title in a landslide, while Dorman – who finished as the top qualifier after the morning’s preliminary session – took second with a score of 404.80.

The pair of Miami divers finished as the only entrants with scores above 400 points, as Virginia’s JB Kolod took the bronze medal with a distant 372.90.

Dorman’s ACC medal was the second of his career, having captured the silver at the 2014 ACC Championships in the same event.

Seniors Cheyenne Cousineau and Thea Vock booked their places in the finals of the 3-meter during morning preliminaries, with Cousineau finishing as the top qualifier (370.60) and Vock in fourth place (311.10). The duo delivered in the night’s finals, as Vock moved into second to earn a silver medal (354.45) while Cousineau finished with a bronze medal and a score of 349.60.

The medal was the third of Vock’s career, who also earned the silver at the 2014 ACC Championships (1-meter) and captured a bronze medal at the 2012 ACC Championships (1-meter).

Miami’s 800-yard freestyle relay impressed in the night’s finale, as Julie Suarez, Ksenia Yuskova, Angela Algee and Heather Arseth finished in a time of 7:17.69.

Miami ended Day One with 150 points on the women’s side, good for third place in the standings. Virginia Tech closed the night in first place in the women’s team scoring with 178 points, followed by North Carolina at 158, the Hurricanes (150), Virginia at 144 and Notre Dame at 141.
