W. Tennis Beats FSU, Makes National Indoors
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team won the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, in day two of competition, with a 5-0 victory over Florida State.
Miami (2-0) clinched the doubles point when eighth-ranked duo of junior Stephanie Wagner and senior Lina Lileikite battled for a tough victory over FSU’s Daneika Borthwick and Emily Fanning, 6-4. The tandem of No. 15 senior Monique Albuquerque and junior Clementina Riobueno also won over Yukako Noi and Daniela Schippers, 6-2.
“We came out so tough in doubles,” Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. “Monique and Clementina set the tone which rubbed off on our entire squad.”
The third doubles match between freshmen Sinead Lohan and Wendy Zhang, ranked No. 37, against Kerrie Cartwright and Gabriella Castaneda was left unfinished with Lohan/Zhang trailing 4-5.
The first singles point was won in retirement by senior Monique Albuquerque, who was cruising over Lana Rush 6-1, 3-0.
On the next court over, No. 58 Wendy Zhang defeated FSU’s Daniela Schippers in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. No. 94 Lina Lileikite secured Miami’s team victory over Florida State (1-1) on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-1 straight-set win over Gabriella Castaneda.
Within seconds, No. 39 Sinead Lohan also recorded a win over Kerrie Cartwright with a 6-3, 6-0 straight sets win, making the final score 5-0.
“I am so happy that both Sinead and Lina were both able to bring in their wins,” Yaroshuk-Tews said.
With the win, the Hurricanes advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted in Charlottesville, Va. from Feb. 6-9. This is the 11th year in a row Miami has made the field.
“We are super excited to go back to Charlottesville,” Yaroshuk-Tews said.
