S&D Travels for Road Meet with VT, GT & UNC-W

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Miami swimming & diving teams travel to the Christiansburg Aquatic Center this weekend for a meet against Georgia Tech, UNC-Wilmington and host Virginia Tech.

Despite the expansive nature of the meet, the Hurricanes will be battling each team in separate head-to-head competitions. The action is set to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“We’re very excited about this one, with ACC competition in Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech and another great team in UNC-Wilmington,” head swimming coach Andy Kershaw said. “We’re really excited. It’s another chance for us to compete and see where we’re at, which is important.”

Miami is riding momentum after splitting a dual meet with Rutgers and Tulane, which followed a decisive Hurricanes win over Illinois State in the team’s home opener. The Hurricanes will need to utilize Saturday’s opportunity before a Senior Day showdown with FIU on Jan. 31.

“We’ve had some exciting meets this year, and we’re looking forward to another one. We might even see a little snow. As far as where we stack up competition-wise, it should be really good…It’s a complicated meet to keep track of as it’s going through, but we’re facing some really good competition.”

Saturday’s action could be a preview of the upcoming ACC Championships (Feb. 18-21), where the Hurricanes will see many of the same swimmers on the blocks in Atlanta, Ga.

Miami will likely need to be paced by many of the same catalysts who guided the Hurricanes to a 167-128 win over Tulane on earlier in Janaury. Sophomore Cameron Davis sparked Miami with an early win in the 1000-yard freestyle, while other key contributors include senior Heather Arseth, sophomore Angela Algee and freshman Julie Suarez.

“It makes it interesting with all these great races. Where we’re really strong, there are going to be other teams that are really strong, which means it’s a great opportunity for our team.”
