Swimming Wraps Up Session III at GT Invite
ATLANTA – The Miami swimming team continued its hot start to the Georgia Tech Invitational Friday, placing a number of entrants in the night’s final rounds after solid preliminary performances during Session III at the GT Aquatic Center.
Team captain My Fridell led the way with a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in a time of 54.65 to earn Miami’s first spot in the Session IV finals. Fridell, who was also one of Miami’s top performers Thursday night, continued her strong weekend with another impressive performance.
Not to be outdone, sophomore Angela Algee earned her spot in the finals of the 100 fly with a time of 54.85. The time was the eighth-best among all participants, and earned Algee her second finals spot in as many nights.
Freshman Julie Suarez earned a place in the consolation in the finals of the 500 free Thursday night, despite not swimming in one of her marquee events. Competing in the 200 free Friday morning, Suarez touched the wall in a time of 1:50.44 to earn a place in the consolation finals once again.
A number of other Hurricanes competed in the 200 free, including sophomore Cameron Davis (1:53.85) and the freshman duo of Rebeka Repman (1:55.32) and Tal Tahori (1:55.67).
Sophomore Julia Schippert turned in a strong showing in the 100 breaststroke, earning a place in the finals with a time of 1:02.61. The time was the sixth-best of nearly 50 entrants in the event, and one of the best of the young season for the Helsingborg, Sweden native.
Despite competing without its diving continent, the Hurricanes opened action Thursday with strong showings across the board. One of the team’s key contributors was senior Heather Arseth, who delivered a personal record in the 50 free on Thursday night.
She was once again giving Miami momentum Friday morning, this time in the 100 backstroke. Arseth finished sixth in the event, ending the morning in a time of 54.93 seconds. She was one of just seven swimmers to finish in less than 55 seconds.
Friday’s finals included the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 800 free relay.
