Vock Leads S&D on Day 1 of SMU Classic
LEWISVILLE, Texas – The Miami Hurricanes ended Day One of the 21st annual SMU Classic in impressive fashion, finishing with a number of strong performances across nine events at the Westside Natatorium.
Miami was led by senior diver Thea Vock, who captured the top finish in the 1-meter event.
“It was a great first night for the Canes!” head coach Andy Kershaw said. “It certainly starts with Thea, who won the 1-meter. She looked great.”
Kershaw was equally as encouraged by the performance of his swimmers, who competed against some of the nation’s top teams in a tournament featuring host SMU, LSU, USC, Louisville and NC State.
“On the swimming side, we had a lot of great performances all the way through the meet,” Kershaw said. “We improved in a lot of the areas we targeted over last two weeks.”
Sophomore Cameron Davis opened the night with a time of 4:32.63 in the 400-yard IM, while freshman Julie Suarez (1:52.15) and sophomore Angela Algee (1:53.38) continued momentum with strong finishes in the 200-yard freestyle.
Senior Heather Arseth touched the wall in a time of 23.34 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. Freshman Rebeka Repman also impressed in the same event, finishing with a time of 24.24 seconds.

Team captain My Fridell followed up Vock’s showing with a time of 54.56 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly. Her performance was bolstered by a strong showing from Algee, who finished narrowly behind Fridell in a time of 54.91 seconds.

Miami’s 800-yard freestyle relay team, comprised of Suarez, Repman, Davis and Fridell, finished the night’s action with a time of 7:33.75. The Hurricanes ended Day One with 111 points.
“Now we get sleep, regroup and see if we can move up in the team standings tomorrow,” Kershaw siad.
