Darquea In Second After Day One At Windy City
WILMETTE, Ill. – The No. 44 Miami Hurricanes began play this morning at the Windy City Collegiate Classic.
Northwestern is hosting the tournament at Westmoreland Country Club.
Miami opened the first round in command of the tournament, maintaining sole possession of the top spot until late in the first round and heading into the second. The Canes finished round one tied at first with Purdue and USC with a score of 294.
Sophomore Daniela Darquea led the way for the Hurricanes with four birdies for a round one and season-best score of 69(-3). Darquea was at the top of the player leaderboard at the end of the round.
Juniors Kailey Walsh and Christina Ocampo each had a season-best score of 74 (+2) in the first round.
Both Ocampo and Delfina Acosta had three birdies in the first round, while Walsh and Leticia Ras-Anderica added two birdies each of their own, bringing the team’s first-round total to 14.
The second round was not as forgiving to the Hurricanes. Miami dropped to tenth after a two-round score of 313, bringing their day-one total to 605 (+29).
Head coach Patti Rizzo was more than pleased with her team’s first round performance. But, Rizzo believes the second round showing is not indicative of the Canes’ talent.
“We played great in the first round and terrible in the second,” Rizzo said. “I’m not exactly sure of the problem, but we need to fix it. This team is too good to play this bad.”
Miami registered 10 birdies in the second round, including four by Daniela Darquea. Darquea, Walsh and Ocampo each shot a birdie at 15 (par-4).
Darquea maintained her steady play, remaining in the top three of the player leaderboard, shooting a 71 in the second round. She completed today’s 36 holes in second place on the players leaderboard with a combined score of 71 (-4).
Her eight birdies on the day were tied for second-best in the tournament.
The Hurricanes return to action tomorrow at the Windy City Collegiate Classic tomorrow morning.
