Senior Tsukamoto Wins in Consolation Finals

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team continued their runs in tournaments across the nation as two Canes were finalists of their consolation draws with one winning the final.

Farnsworth Ivy Plus

At the Farnswoth Ivy Plus in Princeton, N.J., senior Henrique Tsukamoto, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, won his semifinal in a tough three setter against Dominic Patrick from Iowa, 2-6, 6-4,10-4. The senior then dominated in the final of the Lenz Consolation draw beating Alex Knight from Michigan in a decisive straight-set victory, 6-2, 6-2.

Freshman Nile Clark won his semifinal in a walkover against Vaidik Munshaw from St. John’s. In the final of the Cordish Consolation draw, Clark faced a tough challenge and lost, 6-4, 6-2, to Florian Nicoud from Virginia Tech.

His freshman teammate, Andrew Harrington a native of Severna, Park, M.D., playing in the Whitman draw, also faced a tough task and lost in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-2. He then lost by walkover in his consolation bracket to Austin Kaplan of the University of Pennsylvania.

Olympia Fields
During the second day of competition at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational in Olympia Heights, Ill., the Canes also had successful performances.

Freshman Christian Langmo, the local native from Boca Raton, Fla., whipped though his competition in two straight-set victories. In his first match, Langmo dictated play and prevailed over Wyatt McCoy from Notre Dame in a straight-set victory, 6-2, 6-2. In his second match, Langmo was challenged in the first set but then finished off his competitor Drew Dawson from Notre Dame, 7-6(2), 6-4.

Teammate sophomore Bernard Tefel had to comeback from a set down and ultimately won his first match in a tough three-set match against Jake Stefanik from Kentucky, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. In his second match, Tefel was unable to gain momentum and lost in two sets to Eddy Covalschi from Notre Dame, 6-3, 6-1.

Senior Wilfredo Gonzalez lost in another tough match that involved an extended tiebreak in the first set against Robbie Mudge from North Carolina State, 7-6(3), 6-4.

Freshman Piotr Lomacki lost in two difficult matches. In his first match Lomacki dominated the first set but was unable to finish the match losing, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6 against Tim Kopinski from Illinois. In his second match, after losing the first set, Lomacki fought hard but was unable to finish off the second set and lost 6-0, 6-4 to Jared Hiltzik from Illinois.
