Wimbley, USA Win Gold at World Juniors
EUGENE, Ore. – Shakima Wimbley helped the United States secure a gold medal in the women’s 4x400m relay at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships.
The Americans shaved nearly two full seconds off their preliminary time of 3:32.72 from a day ago, crossing the finish line in a world junior leading time of 3:30.42.
Wimbley ran the third leg for Team USA, helping the American quartet to the top of the medal stand. Great Britain took the silver medal, while Germany earned the bronze.
The Canes also had a competitor in the men’s 4x400m relay final. Miami track signee Henri Delauze ran the opening leg of the men’s 4x400m relay for the Bahamas. Delauze helped the Bahamas place sixth with a time of 3:08.08.
The 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships were the largest IAAF event ever contested on U.S. soil. A total of 177 national federations, from Algeria to Zimbabwe, competed at the six-day track and field meet featuring more than 1,750 athletes under the age of 20.
The 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships were held from July 22-27 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The 2014 edition of the IAAF World Junior Championships marks the first time the event has ever been held in the United States.
