No. 28 Golf 21st at NCAA Central Regional
STILLWATER, Okla. – The 28th-ranked Miami Hurricanes women’s golf team is tied for 21st after Thursday’s first round at the NCAA Central Regional at Karsten Creek Golf Course.
The Hurricanes shot a first-round 30-over 318. They are 16 strokes outside the top eight – the cut off for teams to advance to the NCAA Championship. No. 9 Alabama and No. 35 Cal are tied atop the leaderboard at 7-over 295, while No. 21 Florida and No. 39 Kent State are tied for third at 8-over 296.
Out of the 126 golfers playing in Stillwater, only five are under par after 18 holes. Kent State’s Wad Phaewchimplee owns a three-stroke lead at 7-under 65.
Freshmen Daniela Darquea and Delfina Acosta were the Hurricanes’ top scorers on day one as both carded a 3-over 75, good for a 25th-place tie. Miami’s freshmen pair is only three strokes out of the top 10.
“Today was a tough day,” head coach Patti Rizzo said. “I’m not sure what went wrong. We’re all disappointed with our play today.
“We need our best round of the year Friday in order to have a chance (at advancing Saturday),” Rizzo said.
Sophomore Kailey Walsh, junior Rika Park and sophomore Christina Ocampo each shot 12-over 84 during the first round.
As a team, the Hurricanes carded just two birdies and one eagle. Darquea tallied the eagle and one birdie in successive holes at the turn, while Ocampo managed the other birdie.
Play continues Friday at the NCAA Central Regional with the second round teeing off at 8:30 a.m. ET. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
