Three-straight Wins for @CanesMensTennis
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami Hurricanes extended their winning streak to three matches on Saturday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center after defeating Boston University, 6-1.
The win is Miami’s sixth in their last seven matches.
For the second match in a row, the Canes swept the doubles point. They clinched the point after duos of Omar Aly and Wilfredo Gonzalez along with Diego Soto and Henrique Tsukamoto dispatched their opponents with identical 8-4 finishes.
Coach Mario Rincon was pleased with the effort he saw from his players early on.
“We did a good job in the doubles, our guys had a lot of energy and enthusiasm,” Rincon said. “We wanted to concentrate on that today.”
Soto carried over his excellent play from the last two matches, straight-setting Jesse Frieder, 6-1, 6-0. For Soto, it is his second consecutive straight-set victory.
Miami had four total straight-set victories in singles play, including freshman Daniel Shebshayevich’s first career singles victory, defeating Jay Leelavanich, 6-3, 6-4.
The longest match of the afternoon was between senior Omar Aly and Chanon Varapongsittikul. After losing the first set 5-7, Aly battled to win the second, 6-2. The third set tie-breaker was a back-and-forth affair with both players trading points. Aly needed 12 points to finally secure the win and Miami’s final point of the day.
“Omar is having an amazing year,” Rincon said, praising the efforts of the veteran. “He’s been our number one the last few matches. His game is growing, although he’s senior—he’s playing his best tennis.”
The Canes clinched the win when Gonzalez completed the third straight-set win over the Terriers, beating Stefan Lemire, 6-2, 6-1. It was Gonzalez’s second win since returning from injury.
The difference of late for Miami has been the senior leadership. Rincon said the team has been relying on the experienced players.
“There were some very competitive matches out there,” Rincon said “Any time we can get a win at home it’s great.”
