ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Miami track and field program set two school records and a meet record on the opening day of the Don Kirby Invitational.

The Canes, who had a record-setting night at the Albuquerque Convention Center, won three events on Day 1 of the two-day meet.

Thandi Stewart, who made her 2014 debut, was one the Hurricane winners. Stewart set a new Miami record in the women’s 600m, running a time of 1:31.41.

Miami also set records in the women’s 4000m Distance Medley Relay. Alaine Tate, Shannon Wright, Taneisha Cordell and Lindsi Arrington combined to run a time of 11:40.29, setting meet and school records while winning the 4000m DMR.

Anthony Wolliston was Miami’s first winner of the evening, running the fastest time in the men’s 400m unseeded section with a personal-best 48.29 seconds. Wolliston’s time placed him fourth on Miami’s all-time list in the 400m.

Freshman Shakima Wimbley continued the stellar start to her Hurricane career, placing third in the women’s 200m with a personal-best time of 23.56 seconds. Kelsey Balkwill also earned a top 10 finish in the women’s 200m, placing 10th with a time of 24.13 seconds.

The women’s throwers also shined on Friday night as Precious Ogunleye finished fifth in the women’s weight throw with a personal-best mark of 20.07m. Lea Johnson was right behind Ogunleye, placing sixth with a throw of 20.05m. Ogunleye and Johnson now rank third and fourth, respectively, on Miami’s all-time weight throw list.

The women’s unseeded pole vault will start Saturday’s competition at 12:30 p.m. ET and the men’s 60m hurdles preliminaries will be the first running event, scheduled for 12:45 p.m. Saturday.
