Men's Tennis Sweeps Bethune-Cookman, 7-0
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team defeated Bethune-Cookman University, 7-0, today in overcast conditions at the Neil Schiff Tennis Complex.
The Hurricanes took home the first point of the day, winning the majority of the double matches. The pair of William Albanese and Henrique Tsukamoto defeated Alvaro Barrera and Greg Almeida, almost shutting them out, 6-1. Gabriel Flores and Diego Soto won their match against Walid Gtari and Gilbert Rotich, 6-3, to earn the doubles point. Omar Aly and Bernard Tefel did not finish their doubles against Santiago Lobelo and Diego Garavito in an effort to avoid impending rain.
Senior Flores and freshman Tefel both won their matches in fast victories, defeating their opponents, Santiago Lobelo, 6-1, 6-0, and Greg Almeida, 6-0, 6-0, respectively. Tsukamoto won his match against Alvaro Barrera, 6-1, 6-2, then Aly shut out Gilbert Rotich in the first set and went on to win the match, 6-0, 6-4.
Soto and Walid Gtari were in a closer match, but Soto pulled out a win for the Hurricanes, 6-4, 6-2. Receiving the seventh point for the Hurricanes was Albanese, who fought hard in his first set and secured his win in the second set against Diego Garavito, 7-4, 6-1.
The Hurricanes will play again Sunday, Feb. 2 at noon, when they take on Florida A&M at the Neil Schiff Tennis Complex.
